      Chen Shui-bian ( Chinese: 陳水扁; Wade–Giles: Chen Shü’i-bian; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tân Chúi-píⁿ; born 12 October 1950) is a Taiwanese former politician and lawyer who served as the 5th president of the Republic of China ( Taiwan) from 2000 to 2008.
      By the end of the Chen Shui-bian era, Taiwan’s democracy was firmly consolidated. When Chen Shui-bian, Taiwan's first non-Kuomintang president, left office in 2008, his tenure was widely considered a disappointment. More recent events, however, suggest the need for a reassessment of this crucial period in Taiwan's political development.
      Chen Shui-bian made history by breaking the pan-Blue monopoly of power on the island. That is a legacy he can be proud of. Taiwan’s democracy really came of age when Ah-Bian ended the Kuomintang’s one party grip on power. His populist leadership style also changed the way Taiwan politicians campaigned and governed.
